SUMMER HEADLINES
FROM EL CON
Jerry & Mee Wing raise funds for new Club defibrillator
– In order to honor the memory of Phil Salit,
Jerry McSpadden and his wife Mee Wing took it upon
themselves to raise funds to cover the cost of a defibrillator
for the Club. Working from Rochester, they quickly
raised the necessary funds in just a few weeks. The
machine will be delivered to the Club this month and
the staff and others will be trained on its use. Additionally,
a bronze plaque honoring Phil and this donation will
be placed in the clubhouse. Great job Jerry &
Mee!
Deck project continues to move forward – The
replacement of the Club’s deck remains our number
one project. The paper work for the permit has been
submitted to Manatee County by Brad Spotts, a list
of specifications is being made to help in the bidding
process, and a number of contractors are looking to
bid the job. Additionally, the Club is looking at
an alternative plan, “capping” the entire
deck. This project would be less expensive, just as
sound, and could be completed in a timely manner.
The feasibility, cost, time constraints, appearance,
and “what is best for the Club” are all
being reviewed and considered by the Board.
Harvey & Sugi down Ike & Marc (8-1) –
The June 27 Tennis Exhibition & Grill Night saw
a hard fought match between two of El Con’s
Senior Statesmen and two up and coming tennis youths.
Experience was an obvious plus as Harvey & Sugi
dominated play spurring Ike & Marc to head for
the practice courts. There were over 50 fans on the
deck to enjoy the match and Jose’s grilling
on the cook center.
Tony Driscoll marries - Hurricane Tennis Academy director
Tony Driscoll married his Brazilian sweetheart, Paula,
on Saturday, July 26 at his Siesta Key home. Good
luck Tony and best wishes!
Ike & Marc rebound in July Exhibition –
Ike and Marc came out and played with a vengeance
in the July 18 Tennis Exhibition & Grill Night.
They took on Butch Hill & Olivia in the center
court battle before some 50 fans and the “boys”
prevailed 9-7 in a hard fought battle. Jose grilled,
the fans threw out their “jibes” and comments
and the evening was great fun for all in attendance.
Keisha to start full time position – Keisha
Wilbert has agreed to accept the full time position
as the Club’s General Assistant beginning this
month. Keisha’s familiarity with the membership,
the Club, the staff, and computer skills will be a
valuable asset to the Club for the new season. Keisha
has been working evenings and weekends here for four
years. She will continue to work a few week nights
and parties in addition to her full time assignment.
